Amrita Sher Gill -'India's Faridabad Kahlo'

Amrita Sher Gill -'India’s Frida Kahlo'.

Let us know about the famous Indian Painter-Amrita Sher Gill. She is known to be the pioneer of Indian art and is said to be “India’s Frida Kahlo”.

Amrita Gill started painting at the tender age of 8 only, when her family moved from Hungary to Summer Hill, Shimla, in northern India. At the age of 16 she moved to Paris but still continued taking her art classes.

Her painting named Young Girls in 1932 gave her recognition that received a gold medal.

In a very young age of 28, she lost her life but then too she made a big name for her paintings which are still praised.

She used her paintbrush to describe the lives of Indian women and mostly she expressed their loneliness through her paintings. Through her paintings she showed the women involved in different household activities, going to market, talking to other women from neighborhood. She made paintings of relatives and friends, she created self portraits.

She was born in Budapest (Hungary) on 30th January, 1913. Her mother was an opera singer (Marie Antoinette Gottesmann) and father was a Sikh aristocrat and a scholar of Persian and Sanskrit (Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Majithia).
