Educate Your Children

"There is a forecast for a thunderstorm." Thought Rohan to himself as he watched Neetu working in the kitchen." Neetu is a superfast express who finishes everything in a jiffy. But today she's messy. The clatter of dishes and silverware produced an irritating noise that woke me up. I need to address the elephant in the room. God, please help me." Thought Rohan in silent prayer.

Educate Your Children

"There is a forecast for a thunderstorm." Thought Rohan to himself as he watched Neetu working in the kitchen.

"Neetu is a superfast express who finishes everything in a jiffy. But today she's messy. The clatter of dishes and silverware produced an irritating noise that woke me up. I need to address the elephant in the room. God, please help me." Thought Rohan in silent prayer.

"Good morning dear," said Rohan as he landed a peck on his wife's cheek.

"Good morning," replied Neetu with a half-hearted smile.

"What's wrong with you dear?" Enquired Rohan in a concerned tone pulling Neetu towards himself.

Thud thud! It appeared as if Neetu deliberately banged the pan.

"Dear, please share what's bothering you with me. Seeing you like this is troubling me." Said, Rohan.

She walked to the family room and dropped the newspaper in his hands without speaking a word.

He read the article for a couple of minutes and sat there still.

"It is the second case in the last three weeks. These are the statistical numbers we know because it is printed in black and white. What about the other cases of child abuse which go unreported? " questioned Neetu sniffling.

"Really baby there is the law to take care of all this." Said Rohan to calm her.

She gave him a stern look.

"Would you say the same thing if it was the case with Tia our little angel?" Questioned Neetu with scorn.

Rohan was flabbergasted. He did not know what to say.

"You are right dear. We will do the needful. We will educate our daughter so she can handle such situations." Said, Rohan clearing his throat.

"I need to make a few calls." Saying so he excused himself.

Three days later:

"Mumma, today is Sunday which means Funday. What games are we going to play today? What's the plan?" Asked Tia exhilarated?

"You will know soon." Replied Rohan.

They had lunch.

"Shall we learn something new today, Tia?" Asked Neetu glancing at Rohan who was smiling reassuringly.

"Sure, mom." Replied her daughter.

Neetu began speaking-Dear if you feel uncomfortable with anybody's actions may it be a gesture of affection or a touch, that person can be a family member, a friend, the teacher immediately inform me or papa. We will never judge you or reprimand you.

*Never let  Anyone take your pictures.

*Never give your details that is your home phone number, address or the details about my job or dads to a stranger.

*If anyone says, "This is a secret. If you tell your parents they won't let me come over or you will get in big trouble, do not pay heed to the.Get away from there and inform me of dad.  We will support you as long as you are right.

*If you feel something wrong is happening, it is okay to tell an adult or elderly person you have to leave.

*I will give you a code which you can use when you feel unsafe and we will understand. This code will be known to only you, me and papa.

Saying this Neetu gasped a loud sigh.

" Got it, mom. Now time to play," said Tia pulling her mom.

"We will be right there." Said Rohan.

"Good job sweetheart." Said Rohan patting his wife.

"Children should be carefree and playing in the sun and see our plight. I am forced to teach her all this at this tender age." Said Neetu tears welled in her eyes.

"Always remember this quote by Theodore Roosevelt-Justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, But in finding out the right and upholding it, whenever found, against the wrong." You have done the right thing." Said Rohan.

"I am not naive enough to believe this discussion will prevent child abuse but knowledge is a powerful deterrent, especially with young children who are targeted due to their innocence." Said Neetu.

"Don't worry wifey. We will find natural times to reiterate these messages. For now, lesson time is over and  It is a fun time, with your permission my lady." Said, Rohan with a smile.

Let us take time to educate our children about this monster prevalent in the society called child abuse. Let us be empathetic when our children share their problems with us.

Let us fight this issue together.
