Geeta Gopinath , an Indian American, who is the Chief Economist of International Monetary fund since 2019. She is an Indian American, born on December 8, 1971in Kolkatta , India. She did her schooling in Nirmala Convent School, Mysre and graduated from Lady Shree Raam College, Delhi. Then, she did M.A. in English from Delhi School of Economics. She topped Delhi University and bagged a gold medal.

In 2001, Gita joined the University of Washington, Seattle, for a five-year PhD programme as it was fully funded. “I could not have afforded it. All I paid was for her one-way airfare—Rs 50,000,” says Geeta’s father Gopinath
After a few months of starting her PhD, her professor gave her letters of recommendation to three schools, including Harvard and Princeton, and said she was one of the best students the university had in 20 years. Finally she was awarded with her PHD degree from Princeton University. Also, she was awarded the Princeton's Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Research Award while doing her doctoral research at Princeton.
Geeta joined University of Shicago in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and in 2010 moved to Harvard as a professor. Some of her important assignments are to be a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, co-editor of the American Economic Review and managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies.
She has served as the Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala state in India and also served as a member of the Eminent Persons Advisory Group on G-20 Matters for India’s Ministry of Finance.
She has authored numerous research articles on exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt, and emerging market crises.
Her journey from a middle class family of Mysore to a world class economist is a story of her hard work, persistence and determination.
