Make The Dentist Your Friend- Blog post by Dr. Latha Prakash

"I brush my teeth twice every day. Why should I get my teeth cleaned?"

"Please give me antibiotics and painkillers and I'll be okay. I don't want to get any procedure done."

"Why don't you fill my tooth with something? Why are suggesting root canal treatment for a simple decay?"


"Google suggests other treatment procedures."


I have heard the above statements made by patients myriad times in my eight years of practice. I have tried my level best to explain things from a dentist's point of view and give my professional advice but not everyone is a good listener. "Pen is mightier than the sword."


Holding on to this thought, I felt it would be better if I can pen a few tips that can be followed to maintain proper oral hygiene and remain in the pink of health.


*Brush twice every day

Brush your teeth first thing in the morning and before you retire to bed at night. Once you brush your teeth at night don't eat or drink anything.

Brushing your teeth at night helps your oral cavity get rid of any accumulated food particles.

Remember, bacteria in the oral cavity thrive on food debris. They proliferate and increase in numbers. So never miss brushing your teeth at night.


*Gums are as important as the teeth

Just like a strong foundation is important for a house to weather any adversity, healthy gums are a foundation for healthy teeth.

Remember, to massage your gums in a circular motion once you finish brushing your teeth.


*Oral prophylaxis.

Oral prophylaxis is a medical terminology that means professional cleaning of teeth.

Get your teeth cleaned every six months. Despite brushing our teeth every day some minuscule debris is left behind. It forms a thin film on the teeth which soon transforms into tartar.

If neglected the tartar hardens to become plaque and calculus.

Plaque and calculus is nothing but a mass of bacteria. These bacteria release enzymes which cause inflammation in the gums and weaken it.

As a result with time teeth become mobile.


Getting oral prophylaxis done every six months will ensure healthy maintenance of the oral cavity.


*Visit your dentist every six months

You may not have any pain or discomfort in your teeth. But make sure you visit your dentist every six months. Getting a regular check-up will help detect any minor issues and it can be nipped in the bud by proper treatment procedure.

Remember A stitch in time saves nine.


*Google isn't always right

Remember Google always gives generalised solutions which may not be suitable to you.

Doctors give their diagnosis only after a thorough clinical check-up and proper investigative procedures like radiographs(X Rays).


The decay which may appear small and simple to you may in reality have penetrated deep into the pulp. So let the doctors do their job.

Just trust them.


*Medicines isn't the solution.

Dental problems cannot be treated with just medicines. Treatment procedures must be performed to get rid of the problem permanently. Medicines like painkillers may give some temporary respite but the patient needs to undergo treatment for a permanent solution.


*Gift your child a dental appointment

The first dental visit is recommended by 12 months of age or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in.


Dental procedures may little painful and give the patient discomfort but keeping the overall good in mind its important one must not evade it and get it done.


You get two sets of teeth in life, one the milk teeth and the other the permanent teeth, but you must pay the dentist for the third set.
