The Chak De Moment For India

The Chak De Moment For India

"Sattar minute, sattar minute hai tumhare paas, shayad tumhari zindagi ke sabse khaas sattar minute..aaj tum achcha khelo ya bura, yeh sattar minute tumhe zindagi bhar yaad rahenge.

This dialogue from the movie Chak De India gives every Indian goosebumps whenever we watch the scene or hear the dialogue or for that matter just read it.

If a movie can churn a million emotions in our hearts imagine what a real incident can do to us.

Every Indian was bestowed with a golden opportunity to witness the Chak De moment in reality on 2nd August 2021 when the Indian Women Hockey Team defeated the three-time champions Australia to enter the semi-finals.

This has happened a day after the Indian Men enter into semifinals. Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur rose to the occasion and her penalty corner conversion and a string of nine saves by goalkeeper Savita Punia handed the Aussie women the 'Hockeyroos' defeat and disappointment. Though the Aussies dominated the ball possession the Indian team took control of the proceedings.  The Rani Rampal's team put forth a gritty show and entered the history books.

With this victory, Indian Hockey is gradually regaining its lost sheen and glory.

Was this success handed to them in a golden platter? The answer is NO.

Their journey to the Olympics has been a tale of pain, sacrifice and pressure. Most of them belonged to families with low socioeconomic status and were bound by societal norms. Instead of crushing under the weight of judgements, they chose to break the barriers.

They are not the rose plants that grew in favourable environments but they are the concrete roses that can tolerate any harsh conditions. They adapted themselves to the new normal and most of the team-building exercises were virtual.

Let's applaud the grit and determination of the Indian women hockey team and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Three cheers to them.
